Scopus database returns

We are happy to announce that the University of Calgary Library has re-instated the Scopus database. Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database containing both peer-reviewed research literature and quality web sources. With over 18,000 titles from over 5,000 international publishers, Scopus offers researchers a quick, comprehensive resource to support their research needs in the scientific, technical, medical and social science fields.

UptoDate Access Changing

Access to Uptodate will be changing soon, for the BETTER! University of Calgary Faculty and Students will finally be able to access UTD remotely, from any computer any where.

You will need your UCalgary ID/Pin or your email name and password to use UTD from off site. Click here for a brief video that shows how access will work.

Unfortunately though at many of the clinics where you previously had single click access, you will need to use your ID and PW.

Significant Changes to Copyright Procedures

RE: Expiration of Copyright License and Implications for Instructional Materials

On December 21, the Provost sent an update on the status of the University of Calgary's Access Copyright license which is due to expire on December 31, 2010. http://library.ucalgary.ca/copyright/fair-dealing

If the license is not renewed, it will have a significant impact on the manner in which we use and distribute copyright material on campus for both course-related and administrative purposes. Therefore, it is important that this information be shared with all instructors and administrative staff as soon as possible

Over the last fifteen years, our license with Access Copyright permitted pre-authorized reproduction of printed materials for distribution in print format. Rather than renew this license, Access Copyright has proposed a tariff of $45 per FTE for all post-secondary schools in Canada. Under the current pricing model, our total expenditure for 2010 to Access Copyright is approximately $300,000. Assuming that the Copyright Board accepts the tariff as requested, our payment would increase to $1.3 million per year. In addition to increased costs, the new proposal seeks to authorize invasive auditing and expands the scope of their activity when the need for their role is actually diminishing because the University increasingly purchases these reproduction rights as a part of our contracts for electronic publications.

On behalf of its members, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), along with several other organizations, challenged the tariff. In December, Access Copyright proposed that an interim tariff be adopted while the Copyright Board considers its decision. However, as the Provost stated: “As we await the Copyright Board’s decision, we must, in the meantime, continue to prepare for the possibility that we shall assume responsibility ourselves for compliance with copyright requirements”.

Based on recent court decisions and current practices, it is felt that, without an Access Copyright license, neither faculty nor students may make copies or in any way electronically reproduce copyright materials as required readings without securing the necessary permissions. The Provost has asked Libraries and Cultural Resources to be responsible for the communication and administration of these new copyright procedures. The steps we are taking to ensure compliance are outlined below.

We are aware of the challenges this new regime presents to faculty and teaching staff and our goal is to provide the university community with the information and assistance needed to cope with this change while maintaining access to teaching and research materials. We appreciate your cooperation and patience as we work through these new policies and thank you for your understanding.

Changes to Copyright Procedures

•   Procedures for print Coursepacks that fall under the current license (to December 31, 2010) were communicated by the Provost in October of this year and can be found at

•   Moving forward into January, the Bookstore has collaborated with the Copyright Officer to develop procedures to check individual readings in 2011 coursepacks to ensure that all copyright material in the coursepack includes the proper licence or permission. For more details on coursepack production, you can contact the Bookstore staff at custom@ucalgary.ca

•   For information on putting print material on reserve for your classes, please see

•   An option for articles that are available electronically is to set up a persistent URL, which links to our licensed version. Instructions are available at
http://library.ucalgary.ca/services/information-faculty/creating-persistent-urls Please note that readings must not be scanned into Blackboard - but links to licensed material may be made.

•   You may notice that we have modified the Interlibrary Loan Request form to include a check box indicating that the material is borrowed for research, private study, review or criticism only: http://library1.ucalgary.ca/dds.php

•   Early in the New Year, Libraries and Cultural Resources will review all of our current licences with suppliers of electronic content. We anticipate that a large number of these licenses will provide copyright clearance for use of these materials in instruction. This information will be provided online but in the short term, requests for status of electronic works housed in LCR and the terms of their licenses, can be sent to our University Copyright Officer using the form at:

•   Fair Dealing (instruction) – The Association of Universities and Colleges have developed extensive fair dealing guidelines which are available for consultation on the web:

MeSH 50th anniversary: Win an iPod Shuffle, and more!

On Thursday, November 18, 2010, the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) marks the 50th anniversary of its Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) with a talk by Robert Braude, PhD. The talk entitled "MeSH at 50 – 50th Anniversary of Medical Subject Headings" will be videocast with captioning at http://videocast.nih.gov/. The event is scheduled from 12:00 noon – 1:30 PM in the Health Sciences Library. No need to register. Following the videocast, we invite you to join us in celebrating this achievement from 1:30 - 4:00 PM. There will be a contest, prizes (including an iPod Shuffle), and of course, cake!

MeSH was first published in 1960; in 2010 we observe 50 years of this subject control authority. The seeds of MeSH were planted in December 1947. The Army Medical Library, the NLM predecessor, sponsored a Symposium on Medical Subject Headings in 1947. Participants, who included Seymour Taine, Thelma Charen, and Eugene Garfield, considered the challenges of the bibliographical control of publications. It was noted that the increasing complexity of scientific literature necessitated increasingly sophisticated approaches to organization and access. The participants recognized that the issue of a subject authority was not an academic exercise. Rather, subject cataloging and the subject indexing of journal articles were acknowledged as the essence of bibliographic control. The needs of the user of scientific information is to be always at the forefront in creating a set of medical subject headings that were made equally for subject description of books and for indexing of journal articles.

That first edition of MeSH represented a departure from the then usual library practice. MeSH contained 4,300 descriptors, and it was designed to be used for both indexing and cataloging. It is likely the first vocabulary engineered for use in an automated environment for production and retrieval. MeSH continues to evolve and grow. The 2011 edition contains more than 26,000 subject headings in an eleven-level hierarchy and eighty-three subheadings. Annual revision and updating are ongoing to assure that MeSH remains useful as a way to categorize medical knowledge and knowledge in allied and related disciplines for retrieval of key information. MeSH is 50 years old and new each year.

New Simplified Process for Off Site Access

Emergency full-text medical information for Pakistan

The National Library of Medicine announces the activation of the Emergency Access Initiative in support of medical efforts in Pakistan. The Emergency Access Initiative is a collaborative partnership between NLM and participating publishers to provide free access to full-text articles from over 230 biomedical serial titles and over 60 reference books and online databases to healthcare professionals and libraries affected by disasters. While the project was established to assist libraries affected by disasters in the United States, NLM and the publishers are activating the Emergency Access Initiative in light of the growing healthcare issues developing in the aftermath of widespread flooding in Pakistan.

The Emergency Access Initiative serves as a temporary collection replacement and/or supplement for libraries affected by disasters that need to continue to serve medical staff and affiliated users. It is also intended for medical personnel responding to the specified disaster.

PubMedCentral Canada Launches Manuscript Submission System

PubMedCentral (PMC) Canada is pleased to announce the launch of its manuscript submission system, enabling CIHR-funded researchers to deposit their peer-reviewed research publications.

PMC Canada's manuscript submission system supports CIHR's Policy on Access to Research Outputs, which requires CIHR grant recipients to make their peer-reviewed publications freely accessible online within six months of publication.

PubMed Central Canada is a free digital archive of full-text, peer-reviewed health and life sciences literature based on PubMed Central, the archive developed by the US National Library of Medicine. The search interface allows anyone to browse, search and download articles.

PMC Canada is a partnership between the National Research Council's Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the US National Library of Medicine (NLM).

The U.S. National Library of Medicine announces the release of the Emergency Access Initiative in support of medical efforts in Haiti. The Emergency Access Initiative is a collaborative partnership between NLM, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) and participating publishers to provide free access to full-text articles from over 200 biomedical serial titles and over 30 reference books to healthcare professionals and libraries affected by disasters. While the project was established to assist libraries affected by disasters in the United States, NLM and the publishers are activating the Emergency Access Initiative in light of the medical disaster unfolding in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The Emergency Access Initiative collection is a combination of common biomedical journal titles and select reference books, and also emergency medicine related titles. The Emergency Access Initiative serves as a temporary collection replacement and/or supplement for libraries affected by disasters that need to continue to serve medical staff and affiliated users. It is also intended for medical personnel responding to the specified disaster.

If your library is working with a library or organization involved in relief efforts in Haiti or was impacted by the Haitian earthquake, please let them know of this service.

NOISE Alert continues!

Although most of the steel studs are now in, drywalling and work on the heating and ventilation system are starting. We expect the noise to lessen as the drywall goes in and provides additional soundproofing.

Work continues to be on schedule and we hope to have washrooms back in the library in March.

Cochrane Library Update - Canadian National Pilot License

Canadian Cochrane Subscribers and Stakeholders:

There will be a one-month extension to the Cochrane national license pilot via Wiley until January 31, 2010.

Access for all Canadians continues to be dependent on existing Cochrane subscribers renewing their subscriptions in 2010.

Background

The Cochrane Library has been available to all Canadians since April 2009. The Cochrane pilot is running parallel to the work of the Canadian Virtual Health Library (CVHL) Task Force which is seeking funding support for the CVHL. The Cochrane Library is a key element of CHVL content, with the CVHL providing an administrative home for a national license and support for access and training.

The Canadian Health Libraries Association / Association des bibliothèques de la santé du Canada (CHLA/ABSC) and the Canadian Cochrane Network and Centre (CNCC) created a Task Force with representatives from CHLA/ABSC, CCNC and key subscribers to develop the business case for pan-Canadian access to The Cochrane Library; to secure sustained funding for a national license for The Cochrane Library; and to position The Cochrane Library as a key component of the proposed Canadian Virtual Health Library (CVHL). To achieve these goals, the Task Force has developed and implemented communication and training plans, undertaken evaluations, and consulted stakeholders. The Task Force reports to the Boards of CHLA/ABSC and CCNC.

Current status

A web-based Forum was held in December to update and consult stakeholders. Evaluations of the use and perceived value of The Cochrane Library included the compilation of success stories, usage data and a national survey of users, with over 1,100 responses. The data are compelling and provide a solid rationale for a national license.

Next steps

The Task Force is completing its business case and documentation. While the Task Force has also been pursuing single funding for a permanent national license, it is also working on “top-up” funding to continue the pilot into 2010 after the January 2010 grace period.

Access for all Canadians continues to be dependent on existing Cochrane subscribers renewing their subscriptions in 2010. The Task Force recognizes this is not a satisfactory model going forward for any current subscriber. We feel, however, the pilot has demonstrated the need for a national license for The Cochrane Library and the opportunity to continue the trial should be taken.

Leslie Chan is Director of Bioline International, a non-profit publishing institute that provides an Open Access platform for peer-reviewed journals from 18 developing countries. He will be outlining the new possibilities for innovative scholarship through digital and networking technology. He warns that barriers to participation and uncertainty about career advancement are raising new challenges and invites us to help design a new Open Access environment.

This presentation will take place on October 23, 2009, at 2:00 pm, in the MacEwan Student Centre, Room Cassio A + B.

Implications of Budget Cuts at CISTI

CISTI Resources, Programs, and Services

Over the course of 2008, the National Research Council (NRC) was included in the Government of Canada's Strategic Review process. As a result, NRC will be altering resources and programs, which include major changes to CISTI, the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and Canada’s de facto national library for Science, Technology, and Medicine.

It is known that CISTI will continue to exist in some capacity although a budget cut of at least 50% is dictating that it will function on a significantly smaller scale. The details of the impact on library collections or programs and services are not yet known due to the scale and complexity of the required changes. CISTI has until early 2010 to determine and implement changes and the intent to include a stakeholder consultation process as part of the planning has been announced by CISTI.

Immediate changes we can report are:

o NRC Research Press

The journals and services of the NRC Research Press will be transferred to the private sector in 2009. Free electronic access to Research Press journals for all Canadians is now in question due to the projected loss of support of the Federal Depository Services Program (DSP). NRC Research Press journals are currently compliant with the Open Access policies of top international granting bodies, including the US National Institutes of Health, the Wellcome Trust, and the UK Medical Research Council. There is risk that Canada’s largest academic science publisher will no longer be able to sustain its Open Access publishing program.

New "swine flu" info in evidence-based DynaMed

For current, evidence-based clinical guidance, try DynaMed, the new point of care tool now available at U of C.

The clinical summary for "swine flu" was updated today with CDC interim recommendations and information on risk for travellers. The World Health Organization's guidance document was added yesterday. There is also a link to today's CBC News report.

The Cochrane Library now available across Canada

High quality information on health interventions is now freely available to all Canadians through the Cochrane Library for a trial period ending December 31 2009. This pilot is a joint initiative of the Canadian Cochrane Network and Centre and the Canadian Health Libraries Association / Association des bibliothèques de la santé du Canada (CHLA/ABSC) and was made possible by building on the leadership of the existing subscribers from provinces, territories and institutions across Canada.

Some of the Cochrane library has been available to University of Calgary students and staff and Alberta Health Services, Calgary through the Ovid interface. This national license makes all of the Cochrane resources available to everyone.

The systematic reviews in the Cochrane Library are considered to be the best quality evidence for what works and what doesn't in many health care interventions/treatments. Now anyone in Canada connected to the Internet can access these reviews and other types of health care information. Cochrane reviews, while written for health care professionals, include easy to read summaries written for the lay person. As always, however, one should never use health information without first consulting with your physician.

Birds of North America (BNA)

BNA Online provides comprehensive life histories for each of the 716+ species of birds breeding in the USA (including Hawaii) and Canada.Account contents are updated frequently, with contributions from researchers, citizen scientists, and designated reviewers and editors. In addition, BNA Online contains image and video galleries showing plumages, behaviors, habitat, nests and eggs, and more. And most online BNA accounts now feature recordings of the songs and calls of their species, recordings selected from the extensive collection of Cornell's Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds.

New Product on Trial: Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works is a searchable collection containing real transcripts of therapy and counseling sessions and first-person narratives illuminating the experience of mental illness and its treatment, as well as reference works to contextualize the primary material. New material is added on a biweekly basis and, when complete, the database will contain more than 2,000 session transcripts, 40,000 pages of client narratives, and 25,000 pages of secondary reference material. The database currently includes approximately 50,800 pages of material, including more than 11,000 pages of session transcripts, more than 21,000 pages of client narratives, and more than 18,000 pages of secondary reference material.

Health Sciences Online (HSO): "A Visionary Undertaking to Globally Democratize Health Sciences Knowledge"

Students and researchers focusing on Community Health Science or a Health and Society stream of study may find Health Sciences Online (HSO), www.hso.info, particularly useful.

Deemed as the "first authoritative, comprehensive, free, and ad-free resource for the world's health care providers", HSO "crawls" through more than 50,000 resources consisting of courses, references, guidelines, and peer-reviewed/expert-reviewed material to provide free authoritative health sciences information.

While its targeted audience is primarily health care practitioners and public health providers, HSO's open-access policy enables anyone to access updated information on health training, education, and treatment options free of charge. Utilizing a graphical search interface created by Vivisimo, Inc., users are able to input and receive responses to comprehensive search queries quickly and efficiently. Further, HSO's partnership with Google Translator allows learners to search for and retrieve results in one of 22 languages.

Functioning as a portal for all fields of study within the medical sector, HSO is backed by funding from numerous health organizations; in addition, HSO's information is hosted and maintained directly by the website's collaborators and partners. Users can therefore rest assured that the material contained within HSO is selected by experienced, knowledgeable staff, remains current, and is frequently updated.

The decision to create HSO was based, in part, on the World Health Organization's (WHO) observation that while numerous studies have been done on various health sciences related topics, few resources exist that actually identify and retrieve current, widely accessible online educational training resources to promote health care and health policies.

Applied Computational Genomics Course

The Applied Computational Genomics Course (ACGC) runs full-days from July 14th to July 20th in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Bioinformatics Platform (BIP) is offering the course to Bioinformatics/ Biology researchers and students. ACGC is dedicated to EMPOWERING biologists, bioinformaticians, students, and researchers to become POWER USERS of the Bioinformatics Platform.

Leverage the power of Unix for managing data; learn to write quick Perl scripts that get the job done; become proficient in using bioinformatics software and services.

This week long course (running from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. most days) will assist researchers and students to increase their efficiency in problem solving by introducing them to the tools and services of the Bioinformatics Platform, including:

The advantages of using a UNIX environment,
BIRCH (BIological Research Computer Hierarchy),
Bluejay, BioMoby,
Help Desk services and programs

The course fee is $1250.00 for early bird (before June 1st) Canadian registrants; $1500.00 for early bird non-Canadian registrants; $1750.00 for late Canadian registrants (on or after June 1st): and $2000.00 for late non-Canadian registrants. Snack breaks, lunches, and course materials are included in the above listed fee structure.

After the course, attendees of the ACGC will have FREE internet access to all the Bioinformatics Platform tools and databases used in this course.

Tools for Finding Health Related Tests and Measurements

The University of Calgary Library has recently purchased access to Tests in Print (TIP). TIP includes current information about test purpose, publisher, in-print status, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date, and test authors. The database also provides a score index allowing users to identify the subcomponents being measured by each test.

TIP is intended to integrate with Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY). MMY contains information about, and reviews of, English-language standardized tests covering education skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, etc. TIP offers current test information while MMY covers historical reviews. Both are produced by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements at the University of Nebraska.

The Library also subscribes to Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI). The HaPI database provides information about research and survey instruments such as questionnaires, checklists, rating scales and interview forms. It also indexes journal articles and book chapters on selected instruments. Topics covered include public health, nursing, medicine, psychology, gerontology and dental medicine.

This might be a good opportunity to turn a course paper into a Mythbuster for a chance to win an award!

Bates is a teaching resource consisting of 18 anatomy and system specific videos. Each module of the Bates' Visual Guide to Physical Examination shows step-by-step examinations with rationales for the clinician's actions and contains expanded discussions of health history taking, interviewing, and describing findings. Graphics throughout the series illustrate key components of anatomy and physiology.

Funding for Open Access Publishing

University of Calgary professors and graduate students now have access to a $100,000 Open Access Authors Fund. This was created by University of Calgary's Libraries and Cultural Resources in order to provide financial support to university researchers to cover Open Access author fees.

Open Access publishing is a rapidly expanding development in the exchange of research information. An increasing number of academic journals make research literature openly available via the internet without the restrictions on authors and without the high costs to users imposed by traditional subscription-based publications.

This new publishing model does, however, often require that authors pay fees contributing to the costs of publication. With the establishment of this new fund, researchers at the University of Calgary will have the freedom to exercise their own choice in publishing decisions. Open Access publishing is emerging as the best hope for a sustainable and responsible course of action for the future of scholarly communication.

PubMed results now link to U of C library holdings

Obtaining articles from PubMed searches has gotten easier!

We have recently implemented Find It/SFX within PubMed to link your search results to the library's full-text resources. As well, Find it/SFX will also allow you to build a permanent link to online articles, making it a great tool to bookmark articles or to build reading lists.

If the full-text is not available, Find It/SFX will automatically search the catalogue for print holdings. If the library does not carry the article, Find It/SFX will fill out an interlibrary loan request for the item. Just click on the Find It/SFX button in your search results.
